FUTA crisis: Workers urge EFCC to arraign VC in court

Three labour unions in the Federal University of Technology , Akure , have expressed their displeasure over the delay in the prosecution of the Vice Chancellor , Prof . Adebiyi Daramola by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission .
The unions which included Senior Staff Association of the Nigerian Universities , National Association of Academics Technologists and the Non Academic Staff Union have been having crisis with the VC since last year which had led to a series of protests on the campus . They also called for the removal of the VC .
Prof . Daramola was arrested by the anti - graft commission following various petitions over his alleged financial mismanagement. He was however released the same day
Speaking with journalists at the SSANU Secretariat in FUTA on Wednesday , the institution ’ s Chairman of the Joint Action Congress , Mr . Dele Durojaye said the EFCC should either arraign the FUTA boss in court or exonerate him .
He said the EFCC had assured the unions that the investigation would be concluded in December 2016 after which he ( Daramola ) would be arraigned in court . He urged the EFCC to act on the matter .
Durojaye said , “ I think government needs special court to try corruption cases because if EFCC told us that investigation will be concluded by first week of December , here we are 26 th of January ( Wednesday ) , he ( Daramola ) has still not be charged to court .
“ If EFCC has finished investigation in December , what is keeping them, why is the man not in court ? If the Federal Government is sincere in fighting corruption , it should keep EFCC on its toes by establishing special courts so that corruption cases do not take time . ”
The labour leader insisted that the crisis would not end and they would not return to work until the VC was removed , describing him ( Daramola ) as a corrupt administrator .
He also expressed displeasure over the inability of the institution ’ s council to use the extant rules of the university which allowed suspension of any staff or student under investigation of corruption allegations .
” Till date , Prof . Daramola has proved to be above the law (extant rules) which he ( Daramola ) had used on staff and students in the time past, ” he alleged .
The Registrar of the institution , Dr . Modupe Ajayi said the council and stakeholders in town had intervened in the crisis .
She noted that since the issue was still before the anti - graft commission , the council had decided to await the resolutions of the government agency saddled with the responsibilities of handling such cases.
Also , when contacted , the Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC , Mr . Wilson Uwujaren , said the Daramola ’ s case was still with the Ibadan Zonal Office .
“ I will find out from there ( ibadan office ) and I will let you know , ” he stated .
