OAU: *TWO FAJUYIANS SPIT FIRE ON EACH OTHER OVER A BUCKET*

OAU: *TWO FAJUYIANS SPIT FIRE ON EACH OTHER OVER A BUCKET* It's become norm in Obafemi Awolowo halls of residence, that some certain things can't be personalized no matter how quality it is,most especially bucket, and some time "bailers",though the latter was coined by Great Ife students to mean what one use in the bathroom or toilet to 'scoup' water . But what's become norm turned violence on a Tuesday evening as a finalist in Fajuyi hall (annex) sluged it out with a supposedly part two student,as the later refused to released his bucket to the finalist,he claimed the bucket belongs to him of which the former was 'shocked ' as it's become norm for such thing to be of benefit to all . Both parties started "lecturing" each other on how things work in the halls of residence, as this later resulted to name calling. While both parties engaged in the act of name calling, the ever sarcastic ( Aro) fajuyians started fueling the scene just ...

University Admissions: FG May Jettison Uniform Cut-off Point

University Admissions: FG May Jettison Uniform Cut-off Point Indications emerged yesterday that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) may jettison the uniform cut-off point for admission into tertiary institutions in the country. Presently, the federal government pegged 180 mark as the cut-off point for admission into all tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Speaking yesterday, JAMB Registrar, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, said there was an urgent need to rethink the current cut-off point of 180 for admission in order to strengthen access to education, particularly for the poor. He explained that it was critical for “all notable stakeholders to rethink the issue of cut-off marks. I am calling for national debate on the propriety of cut-off marks, institutions should be allowed to determine the kind of candidates they want.” He argued that “the uniformity of cut-off marks does not make any sense when colleges and polytechnics admit for NCE and diplomas while un...

Benin-Lagos Highway Shut Down by Protesting Market Women

Benin-Lagos Highway Shut Down by Protesting Market Women The ever busy Uselu/Ugbowo section of the Benin-Lagos expressway was on Monday shut down as market women from Uselu protested the plan to force them to move into the lock-up stalls built by the Egor Local Government Area of Edo. The protesting women who were armed with various placards and market tools, blocked the two sides of the highway, thereby preventing motorists from coming or going out of Benin. Some of the women who spoke with journalists, said the demand for N1.2m per store by the local government authority was too expensive for them, especially with the type of business most of them does. The women said their problem was compounded the more when the authority of the Egor council started destroying the make-shift stores they have been using for years in the market. According to one of the women, Mrs Celina Okon, the council’s action was an act of wickedness, especially in view of the present economic situation...

The minister ordered the herdsmen to move their cattle out of the FCT, “because there is no way such animals can co-habit with the residents,” a statement on Monday in Abuja, by the Chief Press Secretary to the minister, Muhammad Sule, said. Bello emphasized that even for safety reasons, cattle should not roam on the streets and highways, explaining that in a modern city, animals and vehicles cannot move together on the roads because this could cause accidents. This, he added, was not because the government wanted to prevent cattle breeders from raring their animals in the FCT. “You have to understand that when Abuja Environmental Protection Board says cattle should not roam the city, it is not b...

NJC has powers to suspend arrested judges – Falana

NJC has powers to suspend arrested judges – Falana Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), said on Monday, that the National Judicial Council had the power to place judges under investigation on interim suspension. Falana said in a statement that the position held by the NJC to the effect that it had no power to suspend judges without first receiving a petition against a judge and investigating it was wrong. Citing the provisions of the newly launched National Judicial Policy and a similar scenario in 2006, the lawyer said the NJC had to seek the help of the Department of State Service to investigate some of judges accused of taking N10m bribe after placing them on interim suspension. Falana said, “If the NJC had treated this national crisis with the urgency required it should have investigated the matter based on the avalanche of materials placed before it. “Interestingly, the NJC had handled a similar complaint of judicial corruption about a decade ago. ...

Democracy: need for constructive and investigative criticisms

Democracy: need for constructive and investigative criticisms Criticisms have been the best culture imbibed by Nigerians towards their government even before independence so it’s no new thing that they have continued in that way until now with no one realizing that although criticisms sometimes may be useful as an essential part of any democracy; without realizing that it also has its limitations. I have come to realize that most citizens of Nigeria criticize their government in barbaric  ways which makes their criticisms inexplicable as most of them all in the  name of criticizing the government hurl abusive words at it(some even accompany them with curses)which is highly impious on their part. In view of the present economic recession the country is currently facing it is important to note that the government receives criticisms on daily basis on why they haven’t got the economy fixed out yet from its state of comatose forgetting that it’s easier to get ...
