Katsina alleged underage marriage is unfortunate – Bishop Igenoza
The Rector and Bishop of the Crowther Graduate Theological Seminary, Abeokuta, the Rt. Revd Andrew Igenoza, has described as unfortunate the allegation that the Emir of Kastina forcefully married a 14-year-old girl, Habiba Isiyaku.
This came as the wife of the Primate, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Mrs Nkasiobi Okoh, urged the alleged minor’s parents to hand over the matter to God.
The Katsina Emirate Council had in a statement on the matter, said the Christian-girl allegedly converted to Islam at the emir’s palace and thereafter got married to the 65-year-old monarch, Alhaji Abdulmumin Usman, adding that the marriage and Isa’s conversion to Islam were voluntarily and willingly entered into by the girl.
The duo, who spoke during the Anglican Women Conference, Abuja Diocese, held at the Basilica of Grace, Apo, Abuja, agreed that minors forceful marriage should not be heard in a civilized society.
“What has happened in Katsina is unfortunate. How can a 14-year old girl become a successful mother? Of course that is not good for her health. The best thing to do is to send children both male and female to school or to learn some trades that will be useful to the society”, Igenoza said. “Forceful marriage is not a good thing, because marriage has to be the result of consent of the parties concerned and, in this country, the age of consent starts from 18. So, that thing that happened in Katsina is very unfortunate.”
The wife of the Primate called on the parents of the victim to hold unto God and hand over the case to Him, who is the owner of all things.
