AN OPEN PETITION TO THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION, ASSOCIATION OF CAMPUS JOURNALISTS. (ACJ OAU).
AN OPEN PETITION TO THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION, ASSOCIATION OF CAMPUS JOURNALISTS. (ACJ OAU).
Sequel to the modalities doctored today by the Chairman Electoral Committee, ACJ OAU (Lukman Fasasi), as a yardstick to be eligible to participate in tomorrow's election,
Socioscope News Agency has observed some irregularities and discrepancies as to the conduct of the Electoral process. We do not only see it as an aberration but a dent on the integrity of the Electoral Commission.
It can be quoted that the Electoral Committee Chairman stated categorically that only members who have spent at least a session with the association can vote while even making reference to the Constitution. Except another constitution was written overnight, we stand to say that the statement made is neither constitutional nor a conventional basis.
The Constitution as provided under Article 7, Section 28 (1)
states and I quote
Only members of the registered agencies of the Association who have spent at least a session as a student and as campus journalist shall be eligible to *contest* in elections.
Except the leadership of the Commission needs an explanation of the Constitution, it is clear that the provision was only made for *contestants* and not *voters* of which he has already gone against, by presenting members who are not qualified, going by the above, for Manifestoes.
Going by convention, only members of registered news agencies are allowed to partake in the voting process without any doctored clause.
We can't just but see this as a way to question the integrity of the Commission led by Mr. Lukmon Fasasi
and we will not fold our hands to allow an individual to pull the wool over our eyes as ACJ is known to be a body of Intellectuals.
Unless a review is made to the doctored modalities, we stand to say that tomorrow's election will be boycotted as the integrity and credibility of tomorrow's election already stands to be questioned.
With all sense of humility, this petition must be responded to before the commencement of tomorrow's election, otherwise the election may not go as planned.
