KINSMEN BACK JONATHAN OVER COMMENT ON 2015 ELECTION

Kinsmen of former President Goodluck Jonathan, under the aegis of Ogbia Political Forum (OPF) in Bayelsa State, have risen to his defence, insisting that both internal and external conspiracies swayed the 2015 Presidential election in favour of President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressive Congress (APC). Blistering criticisms had greeted Jonathan’s interview in a new book entitled ‘Against the Run of Play’ by This Day editorial board chairman, Mr. Segun Adeniyi, in which he (Joinathan), for the first time, spoke of circumstances leading to his defeat at the polls. However, the OPF, in a statement by its President, Chief Azibaodusi Maclean Aduba, said it stood by the revelation from Jonathan on the many local and international forces that took an unusual interest in the last elections to the ex-President’s detriment. Aduba, who accused President Muhammadu Buhari of confirming Jonathan’s explanation when he thanked the international community for their roles in the elections whil...

WHY I SNUBBED OONI - OBA Of Lagos

The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Aremu Akiolu, has defended his controversial reaction to the affectionate greeting of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, at a public event, as seen in a viral video last week. In the 25-second recording, the Ooni of Ife is seen arriving at the venue of the event, which has the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu II, in attendance, seated among an unidentified monarch. The Ooni walks over to embrace the monarchs, but as soon as he approaches the Oba of Lagos, Oba Akiolu looks away, only acknowledging the Ooni with the wave of a hand. The visibly embarrassed monarch then quietly returns to his seat. The video clip was met with outrage on social media and among prominent Nigerians, with many describing Oba Akiolu’s action as disdainful and unbecoming of a Yoruba monarch. However, when The PUNCH reached out to the Oba of Lagos by telephone, the monarch sounded undisturbed by the controversy surrounding the awkward greeting. Oba Akiolu, explaining t...

Details of his medical condition were not disclosed. “President Buhari himself, on his return to the country, made Nigerians aware of the state of his health while he was in London. Full...

WHY NIGERIANS WERE SHOCKED ABOUT ACTION OF OBA OF LAGOS

Image
video clip apparently showing the traditional ruler of Lagos snubbing the spiritual leader of the Yoruba people has caused controversy in Nigeria. In the footage, the 73-year-old Oba (king) of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, appears to rebuff the greetings of the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, at a public event in the city Tuesday. The ooni, 42, then went quietly to his seat without incident but what appeared to be the oba’s dismissive attitude sparked protests online — and speculation as to what was behind it. The Ooni of Ife is the most powerful and influential monarch among the Yoruba people of southwest Nigeria, who are the country’s second biggest ethnic group after the Hausa-Fulani. Historically, the ooni or any king in Yorubaland was revered and considered “the sovereign, second in rank to the gods”. “We want to assume that Oba Akinolu did not realise it was the ooni that greeted him,” Yinka Odumakin, of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere, told AFP. “Otherwise, we ...
