FIFA, Man U, Dalung mourn dead Calabar fans

World football governing body , FIFA , and Manchester United Football Club have expressed sadness over the death of some football fans in Calabar , who were electrocuted while watching the Europa League quarter- final between Manchester United and Anderlecht on Thursday , the News Agency of Nigeria reports .
Also , Minister of Youth and Sports , Solomon Dalung , condoled with the Cross River State government and families of the victims of the mishap .
Seven fans were confirmed dead and many injured as an electric cable from a high tension installation fell on the viewing centre where they were watching the match , which United won 2 - 1 .
“ FIFA is deeply saddened by the deaths of several football fans in Calabar and offer our deepest condolences to family and friends of the victims , ” FIFA wrote on twitter on Friday.
United also tweeted on Friday, “ Our thoughts go out to the Manchester United fans , their friends and families affected by the tragedy yesterday ( Thursday ) in Calabar , Nigeria . ’
Dalung , in a statement signed by his spokesperson Nneka Ikem - Anibeze in Abuja on Friday, described the incident as horrific and a sad one for the state and football- loving Nigerians .
“ It is quite unfortunate that such a gory incident took place where youths usually gather to watch football. We all know the unifying strength of sports especially football irrespective of who is playing the game , ” the statement read .
