*PRESS RELEASE*
The students' Union President speaks on his proposed transportation scheme and the state of Union account.
The president of the students' Union, Dr. IBK has revealed his plans on the proposed Students' Union transportation scheme. This he made known today in a conversation with the ACJ President, Mr Okeowo Olasunkami.
He said his plan to procure four 15 seaters buses at a subsidized prize of #3m each . He claimed the project will be funded from the Union's account. While giving an analysis of what the Union has in coffer, he explained that the union last session annual due when the union wasn't on ground was a total of #9million naira. He also pointed out that the union has #5million backlog left with the university management during the TY led administration which makes a total of #14million.
To this effect, he made it bold that a proposal letter stating what the #14million is to be used for has been written and sent to the management while there is an indication that the management will provide a feed back tomorrow(27th of April, 2017). He further explained that he has an intention of getting up to 10 buses for the transportation scheme before he leaves the office.
He made his plans known to employ students as the drivers of the buses, the reason for which he said would be an avenue to empower some students with driving skill to earn money while they study ,and this will be done in a way that their academic activities will be considered.
The ACJ President pointed out the usual stress some fresh men pass through when coming with their luggage due to insufficient buses that will convey them to halls of residence. He claims the drivers are fond of exploiting the fresh students. The Students' Union president in his words promises to address the issue raised by the ACJ President by stationing members of great Ife students' security at different places to curb the menace of the drivers .
He further explained that the plan to renovate one of the union condemned van that will be used for patrol by the security team is in process, affirming that the renovation will cost between N60,000 - N100,000.
While the issue of reckless driving among students and non-student drivers was discussed, the SU President says the defaulters will be punished and that orientation programmes will be organized for the drivers on how to drive on campus.
