8 Alaba traders docked over alleged N19.5m goods theft

Eight sales representatives at Alaba International Market, Lagos, who allegedly stole goods worth N19.5 million, were arraigned before an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, yesterday.
The defendants, Chukwuemeka Ibezim, 21; Ndiobi Stanley, 20; Ani Christian, 21; Caroline Emmanuel, 28; Chimezie Ekeh, 28; Chukwuemeka Salome, 28; Okwudili Nnamani, 21, and Anthony Ikechukwu Emenike, 21, were alleged to have, between June 1 and August 2, conspired among themselves to steal electrical items from the warehouse of their employee, Mega Electric Company Limited, belonging to one Nnamdi Ohizu.
The items allegedly stolen by the sales assistants include 15 wheel trucks of mega electric sockets and AVR automatic voltage regulators.
The prosecutor, Goody Osuyi, told the court that Chukwuemeka Ibezim, Ndiobi Stanley, Ani Christian, Caroline Emmanuel, Chimezie Ekeh, Chukwuemeka Salome, stole the items from the warehouse, while Okwudili Nnamani and Anthony Ikechukwu Emenike, received the said goods.
The offences, according to him, is contrary to and punishable under Sections 409, 278 and 326 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
However, their lawyers, led by Spurgeon Ataene, urged the court to admit them to bail in the most liberal terms.
Magistrate A. Ajibade admitted bail to each of the defendants in the sum of N250,000, with two sureties in like sum.
One of the sureties, according to the Chief Magistrate, must be a blood relation of the defendants and present to court evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State government.
The matter has been adjourned till October 10, for mention.
