I don’t know. “The doctor now in the next days has to check the situation, but I don’t think he’s available for the national team. “It’s normal when you play three massive games in only seven days, you must consider this aspect [fatigue]. “We needed to take this risk because Morata for us is an important player.”

This clarification was made by Mrs. Adebimpe Akinsola, Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, who stated that many sculptures had been made to illustrate the other essence of the late sage, particularly the ones that portray him as a ‘dogged fighter’ standing with his popular victory sign, but the new bust, depicting him in an entirely new mode, simply alludes to his multi dimensional standing. “The reality is that Chief Awolowo was a colossus who cannot be stereotyped. Northern Togo: A bad place for a protest movement

Kparatao village in northern Togo has become the epicentre of a challenge to Africa's longest-ruling dynasty With its dirt roads of red earth, children playing with old tyres and succession of dilapidated mosques, northern Togo is an unlikely home for a movement that's challenging Africa's longest-ruling political dynasty. But small, out-of-the-way Kparatao is where Tikpi Atchadam was born to a local farmer and food seller in 1967 and spent his childhood. Until just a few weeks ago, the former law student, hailed by his supporters as someone who "stops power from sleeping", was a relative unknown. But the head of the Panafrican National Party (PNP) has become the new face of Togolese opposition after organising the recent mass protests against President Faure Gnassinge. In Kparatao as in the neighbouring city of Sokode, most of the street lights don't work while the tarmac doesn't go beyond the main road linking Togo with Burkina Faso.

Iraq's Kurds celebrate massive "yes" vote

Arbil (Iraq) (AFP) - Iraq's Kurds announced a massive "yes" vote for independence on Wednesday following a referendum that has incensed Baghdad and sparked international concern. In a retaliatory move, airlines from Turkey as well as Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon said Wednesday they will halt flights to and from Iraqi Kurdistan this week until further notice at the request of Baghdad. Longtime Iraqi Kurd leader Massud Barzani said the vote would not lead to an immediate declaration of independence and should instead open the door to negotiations. But Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi told lawmakers on Wednesday there was no question of using its results as the basis for talks

Brexit : UK economy nosedives in global competitiveness ranking

The UK has fallen down a global list of the most competitive nations and experts are warning that Brexit could see the country slip further. The World Economic Forum’s annual competitiveness index ranked the UK as the eighth best economy in the world, down from seventh last year. The WEF said the Brexit vote had not yet fed through into the rankings, but that it will likely do so in over the coming years. 130 European firms expected to apply for new licences to operate in UK Switzerland topped the rankings for the ninth straight year, thanks to an efficient labour market, strong innovation and technological readiness, according to the WEF’s report. The US moved up one place to second, despite fears that a Donald Trump presidency could mean a more protectionist future for the world’s largest economy. The WEF said Brexit is "likely to further undermine the country’s competitiveness" in future. The organisation has previously warned that Brexit is likely to have neg...

Unilorin rejects "terrorist" tag

The attention of the management of the University of Ilorin has been drawn to media publications on Monday in which our peace-loving and pace-setting University was described as a "terrorist organisation" by the University of Ibadan Branch Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Ayodeji Omole. This is unfortunate, especially coming from someone who is expected to know the gravity of such appellation. While the University is not ready to join issues with this fellow, who appears hell bent to drag the good names that Unilorin has made for itself over the years, in the mud, we want to make it abundantly clear that the disciplinary action recently taken by the University against two of its staff, which is the basis for his outburst, followed due process and it was in line with the laid down rules and regulations as contained in the Universitys Conditions of Service. We wonder when an internal affair of the University of Ilorin has now become the busin...

Lacazette scores twice as Arsenal beats West Brom

The France striker - who has scored in each of those home wins - headed into an open net in the 20th minute after West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster tipped Alexis Sanchez's free-kick onto the crossbar. West Brom felt they should have been awarded a penalty before the opener when Shkodran Mustafi brought down Jay Rodriguez with a sliding challenge - but no foul was given by referee Bobby Madley. Instead of staying on the ground following the contact, Rodriguez chose to continue but his shot was tipped onto the post by a diving Petr Cech. After the break, Arsenal were themselves rightly awarded a spot-kick when Allan Nyom barged over Aaron Ramsey close to the byeline. Lacazette stepped up and calmly slotted into the bottom right corner - his fourth goal since his club record £46.5m summer move from Lyon. The Baggies caused Arsenal problems in the first half in particular, with Nacho Monreal brilliantly clearing a Rodriguez header off the line in the 38th minute. Victory for ...
