Eight die in Ogun auto crash, expectant mother injured

Eight persons, including a young girl, were confirmed dead in a road crash in Ogun State on Sunday, while an expectant mother and a boy sustained injuries .
The accident, which involved a car and a truck , occurred at Ewekoro on the Lagos - Abeokuta Expressway.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the accident occurred around 12 .50 pm when the driver of the blue Toyota Corolla Sport car with number plate AKD 649 FP lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a stationary truck .
Seven occupants of the car – four male and three female adults – died on the spot, while a young girl was confirmed dead later in the hospital due to injuries she sustained in the crash .
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, who blamed the accident on excessive speeding leading to loss of control of the vehicle, said the driver of the car was discovered to have been drunk.
He stated that the remains of the deceased had been deposited in the mortuary of the General Hospital, Ifo, Ogun State .
Akinbiyi also said the injured pregnant woman had been referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, for treatment.
Akinbiyi said , “We learnt that the Toyota Corolla Sport vehicle was inbound Abeokuta on the old Lagos -Abeokuta Expressway when the accident happened .
“The driver , who was drunk , lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speeding , and rammed into a stationary truck parked along the road , killing seven persons ( four males and three females) inside the vehicle .
“The post-crash report on the accident indicates that the pregnant woman among the survivors has been referred to the FMC , Idi -Aba , Abeokuta , while the injured girl has been confirmed dead .
“Though the driver of the truck was not in the vehicle when the accident happened , he later made himself available for arrest and he has been taken to the Ewekoro Divisional Police Station with the vehicles involved in the accident .”
