My Sad Story By Salau Olamide

My Sad Sorry Story A day I will never forget that ruins my chances of ever being normal again. Called  me a Drama Queen but I would rather be that than anything else. On this said day...oh...the thought of it gives me chills, I'd wish I could purge the memory off me.     But before I continue with my tale, I'll not have you feeling sympathetic on my behalf because I take full responsibility for my actions on this unfortunate day. "Enough with the digression!" I tell my annoying heart, vengeful memory and fantastic pen.       My cousin, of whom I dearly love walked up to me that unfortunate day with a gloomy countenance informing me he had something of utmost importance to say. My cousin, who was known to be the bad egg in our family was my favorite family member apart from my siblings, of course. I was apprehensive when I saw the sad look on his face and I vowed to erase that look. If I had known I would have turned a blind eye at the expression and con...

WHY 'THEY' DON’T WANT TO BE TEACHERS by SIR JUDAH

WHY 'THEY' DON’T WANT TO BE TEACHERS by SIR JUDAH 'They' (apologies to Dr.Reuben Abati) in this article refers to all the critics of the teaching profession - the doctor and lawyer wannabees, the 'children of anger' who saw their admission into the faculty of education as their most assured attempt at salvaging a dwindling academic career, the medical and pharmacy dropouts who have always found accommodation at the mother of all faculties. The perpetual jamb customers  who keep writing jamb even till their final year just to exit this 'lowly rated' faculty of teachers, everyone else reading this piece with the intention of still exiting the faculty, and every other individual, who, owing to fate and serendipity, have ended up as educationists-in-training Although Albert Einstein posited that 'It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy, creative expression and knowledge', the inexorable surge in the number of disenchanted teachers-in-tra...

HISTORY OF SPORTS IN NIGERIA by Olalekan Olamide S (006) Before gaining independence, couple of Nigerians had taken the world sporting arena by tempest, beating close adversaries to become champions. Any semblance of Emmanuel lfejuna who won a gold award in high jump amid the Commonwealth recreations in 1954, Hogan "Kid" Bassey who turned into the world featherweight boxing king in 1957 and Dick Tiger who won the middleweight crown and later the world light heavyweight crown could even now be recollected. In 34 years, Nigerian sportsmen and ladies have settled Nigeria's name solidly on the map of awesome sporting countries. Sports in Nigeria started to take genuine roots in the nation in 1963 when the National Sports Commission (NSC) started to work under Abraham Ordia as secretary. THE STATE OF THE UNION: AN INSIDER'S PERSPECTIVE BY HON. JIGAN

Image
THE STATE OF THE UNION: AN INSIDER'S PERSPECTIVE BY HON. JIGAN "As long as the world shall last, there shall be wrongs, and if no man rebelled, those wrongs would last forever"- Clarence Darrow I got back to campus this session after about a week of official resumption. On arrival, i was greeted with tasty stories of politicking and counter politicking being played by the President and Speaker of the house respectively. Word on the street was the Speaker, like the proverbial Ladoke Akintola, had turned the political tables in his favour by flipping the script he was handed by the President. He had out played the President by making sure that those in whom the President was pleased never assumed office. Most notably the Budgetary and Finance Committee of the Union and the Judicial Council of the Union . Shortly after my arrival on campus, another Parliamentary sitting was called. Notable among issues discussed at this sitting was the issue of the newly constituted commi...

AFCON qualifiers: Bafana Bafana arrives Wednesday

AFCON qualifiers: Bafana Bafana arrives Wednesday The South African Football Association has confirmed that the Bafana Bafana delegation will fly to Nigeria on Wednesday ahead of Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles slated for the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. Meanwhile, 21 invited Super Eagles players, alongside their technical crew and backroom staff, have commenced training sessions today ahead of Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Although the Bafana Bafana have never beaten the Super Eagles in a competitive game, Nigerians would remember that a 2-2 draw at the same venue between both teams in November 2014 meant the Eagles missed the cut for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations finals. Tokelo Rantie scored both goals, before left –sided midfielder Sone Aluko also replied with a brace – something that is a usual occurrence in matches between both nations. Before Rantie and Aluko, Rashidi Yekini (of blessed memory), p...

Pepe says goodbye to Real Madrid fans

Pepe says goodbye to Real Madrid fans Pepe has written a heartfelt farewell note to Real Madrid after confirming his 10-year Santiago Bernabeu stay will soon come to an end. The combative central defender revealed on Monday he would not be extending his stay when his contract expires this month, having only been offered a deal for one more year instead of the two he was hoping for. He has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, while rumours of a Premier League switch also abound, but on Tuesday the Portugal international was in the mood for nostalgia. The 34-year-old wrote on Instagram: “On July 12, 2007 I arrived at Real Madrid with the illusion of a boy who arrived where he had dreamed every day of his childhood. “Today, 10 years later, I have to stop wearing this badge. Every day I wore this shirt, I did it with the illusion of always. “Today I can only thank all of you who have supported me, that you have written this beautiful story with me. Thanks ...

South Africa slips into recession

South Africa slips into recession South Africa has entered recession for the first time in eight years, data from Statistics South Africa showed on Tuesday. Data from Statistics South Africa in Pretoria showed the first quarter contraction was led by weak manufacturing and trade. The data showed that South Africa’s economy contracted by 0.7 per cent in the first three months of 2017 after shrinking by 0.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of last year The worst performing sector was trade, catering and accommodation, which contracted by 5.9 per cent, while manufacturing – one of the key sectors – fell by 3.7 per cent. Standard Chartered Bank’s Chief Africa Economist Razia Khan said the “awful” data showed weakness where it was not expected. Analysts said the contraction suggested high unemployment and stagnant wages were dragging down South Africa’s long-resilient consumer sector. “The slowdown in first quarter was due to much worse re...

Zidane surpasses Guardiola, Mourinho

Zidane surpasses Guardiola , Mourinho I N just 512 days Zinedine Zidane has turned Real Madrid around, winning two Champions Leagues and a LaLiga title in his first year and a half in the dugout of the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu – not to mention the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup successes. That means the Frenchman has already equalled the European Cup tallies of two of the other highest-rated coaches in world football, Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho In 17 months he already has as many Champions League medals in his pocket as the Portuguese coach – who has been managing for 15 years – and as the Catalan coach – who now has nine seasons of coaching experience. Already he left his mark on Real Madrid as a player, by helping them towards their ninth European Cup with his volley in Glasgow, but now he is having just as great an impact from the sidelines. What he has achieved this season makes him the best coach at the moment and it is near impossible that he...

Crude oil price drops, threatens Naira, 2017 budget

Crude oil price drops, threatens Naira, 2017 budget Nigeria’s excess crude oil revenue has dropped by five per cent as oil prices fell to $49.26 per barrel yesterday, posing fresh threat to implementation of the yet unsigned 2017 budget and the exchange rate of the naira. President Muhammadu Buhari presenting the 2017 Budget before a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday, December 14, 2016. Specifically, the nation generated about $114 million from the export of about two million barrels per day in May, 2017 when prices stood at $57 per barrel. But the revenue dropped to $108 million yesterday when oil prices crashed from over $50 per barrel to $49.29 in the global market. This development translates to reduction in accretion to the nation’s external reserves, hence reduction in dollar supplies, which undermines the stability of the Naira exchange rate. Though the Naira appreciated to N375 per dollar in May, external reserves however fell by $535 million d...

Buhari administration charts new economic roadmap

Buhari administration charts new economic roadmap Successive administrations have been paying lip service to diversification of the economy. But there are indications that the Muhammadu Buhari administration, compelled by the realities of the recession and its promises of change, has taken some hard decisions. Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI examines the drive by the administration to chart a new roadmap for the economy. THERE is a glimmer of hope that the Muhammadu Buhari administration is working towards improving the country’s business and economic climate. First, the announcement came three weeks ago that Acting President Yemi Osinbajo had signed three Executive Orders, to change some of the ways government business and operations are conducted, by removing the issue of duplication of duties and confusion in the operations of the various ministries, departments and agencies. This was followed up by an interactive meeting two weeks ago between some members of the Fede...
